Santa Monica : Building Height Limits

Share

The City Council voted unanimously to revise interim development standards to reduce the maximum allowable building height along Ocean Park Boulevard from three stories to two stories.

Responding to residents’ complaints that massive new structures were incompatible with existing one- and two-story buildings, the council in August approved a 45-day interim ordinance that downzoned 14 blocks along Ocean Park--from Lincoln Boulevard to 25th Street--from an R-3 density to R-2.

Tuesday night, council members agreed to reinstate the R-3 zoning, but reduced the maximum building height from three stories or 40 feet, to two stories or 30 feet. This change, they said, would help the neighborhood more than outright downzoning.

The interim development standards are scheduled to be in effect until next summer.
