FOUNTAIN VALLEY : Security Tightened at Oka Elementary

Share

In the wake of a fatal shooting last month near Oka Elementary School, the Fountain Valley School District board of trustees agreed to fence the school and develop a better security plan.

The gang-related incident that resulted in the death of a 17-year-old and an unrelated shooting later that evening have prompted widespread community concern. But police reports indicate they were probably isolated incidents, Supt. Ruben Ingram said.

A temporary fence was installed Aug. 31 to limit access to the school from the rear. Students who live south of the school have been rerouted and maps of the new routes were distributed on the first day of school.

School officials will hold workshops with police to develop a security plan and will apply for $5,000 in funding through a school-law enforcement partnership program.
