Mistake-Plagued Long Beach Seeks Improvement at San Diego State
Cal State Long Beach’s football team, 0-2 under George Allen, will play San Diego State in a nonconference game at 7 tonight in San Diego Jack Murphy Stadium.
Allen’s teams in the NFL were known for making few mistakes, but the 49ers have committed nine turnovers that have led to 41 of the opponents’ 86 points.
“There’s something that you can’t do if you want to win, and that’s have turnovers,” Allen said after a 27-13 loss to Utah State last Saturday.
San Diego State opened its season last week by giving up 576 yards in total offense in a 42-21 defeat at Oregon. Dan McGwire, the Aztecs’ 6-foot-8, 240-pound quarterback, completed 20 of 40 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns.
Long Beach quarterback Todd Studer has completed 19 of 45 passes for 192 yards this season. He threw his first touchdown pass last week. The 49ers have lost their last four games against San Diego State.
