A 22-month-old boy who fell into a swimming pool at a friend’s house remained in critical condition late Sunday at Children’s Hospital of Orange County, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Abel Pena fell into a pool on Saturday while his mother and aunt were distracted, caring for another child who had suffered a bee sting, a Costa Mesa police spokeswoman said. The accident occurred about 4:50 p.m. at a home in the 2200 block of Minor Street, the spokeswoman said.

The mother, who was not identified by police, told police the boy was left alone in the back yard for not more than two minutes. When she returned and found him lying on the bottom of the pool, she immediately administered emergency resuscitation.
