Oxnard : Train Derails but Cargo Undamaged

Share

A freight train traveling through Oxnard on Monday night derailed, dislodging four boxcars full of new Mazdas.

The 60 vehicles were unscratched, said Jim Loveland, a spokesman for Southern Pacific Transportation Co.

He said Mazda ships the vehicles from Japan to Port Hueneme, and Southern Pacific takes them from there.

The train, with 21 loaded and seven empty boxcars, left an Oxnard railroad yard about 10:30 p.m. Monday traveling about six m.p.h., he said.

When it derailed, three of the boxcars remained standing and one tilted at about a 45% angle. Southern Pacific sent a crane to upright the car and prevent the Mazdas from toppling out, he said. Each boxcar carried 15 Mazdas.

Southern Pacific personnel are investigating. There were no injuries.
