Walnut : Alcohol License Protested

An application for a license to sell beer and wine at a gas station mini-mart drew heated protests from Mayor Bert Ashley last week.
“I do not want to see us giving mixed signals to our young people,” Ashley said. “Gasoline and alcohol don’t mix.” City Atty. Scott Nichols told the council that it had no legal grounds to overturn the licensing, which was granted by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control.
The council voted 3 to 2, with Ashley and Councilman Thomas Sykes dissenting, not to object to the application by the Texaco Food Mart at 762 N. Nogales St. Ashley said she would protest to the state agency.
