MEN’S SOCCER

The Sockers signed forward Jim Gabarra on Thursday, giving the team nine returnees from last year’s championship team.

Gabarra, a five-year veteran, will enter his second season with the Sockers after scoring 10 goals and assisting on eight others last year.

Gabarra’s international experience consists of having played on the 1988 U.S. national team in the Seoul Olympics, the 1989 U.S. five-a-side team that won a bronze medal in the World Indoor Championships and in qualifying rounds with the U.S. national team prior to the 1990 world Cup.

In other matters, Paul Wright has been added to the Major Soccer League select team that will play two exhibitions against the national team Oct. 28 and 30. He leaves today with Coach Ron Newman for St. Louis to begin training. Brian Quinn joins them on Wednesday.

Also, another defender arrived at camp on Thursday, John Sveinson, a native of Iceland who played with the Sockers’ Auto Trader reserve team last year.

Host Point Loma Nazarene College defeated Christian Heritage, 7-0, as Steve Cokkinis and Andy Strandberg combined to score five goals. Cokkinis had three and Strandberg finished with two. PLNC improved to 2-3; Christian Heritage fell to 0-4.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Host Christian Heritage improved to 2-0 by defeating Loma Linda-Riverside, 15-10, 15-8, 9-15, 15-11. Melanie Barringer, with 15 kills, and Leslie Nasser, with six aces, led Christian Heritage, which overcame an 11-4 deficit in the final game. Loma Linda-Riverside is 0-1.

FOOTBALL

Ron Allen, a backup tailback, rushed for 205 yards on 17 carries and two touchdowns to lead Army-Navy to a 28-0 victory over Calif. School of the Deaf in Riverside.

Allen scored on runs of 56 and 25 yards while Army-Navy (2-0) held CSD (0-2) to 34 yards rushing.

WATER POLO

UC San Diego lost to No. 5-ranked UC Santa Barbara, 14-5, in Santa Barbara and fell to 2-8 on the season.
