A small plane crashed in a wooded area Saturday, killing four people, authorities said.

The victims, two men and two women, were Canadians flying out of Montreal, said Capt. Stan Warshaw of the Civil Air Patrol.

The twin-engine Piper Comanche disappeared from radar and began transmitting an emergency distress signal, Warshaw said. Rescue workers used four-wheel-drive vehicles to get close to the crash site in steeply banked woods a mile off a state road.

The cause of the crash was under investigation.
