COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Gill’s Goals Help UCI Roll at Brown Water Polo Event

Steve Gill scored 15 goals and the UC Irvine water polo team won three matches by scoring a minimum of 16 goals in each match on Saturday at the Brown Invitational in Providence, R.I.

The invitational is not structured as a tournament and is meant to give teams a chance to gain experience against West Coast teams such as UC Irvine and California.

Gill, a sophomore, had seven goals to lead the seventh-ranked Anteaters (6-3) to a 17-14 victory over Brown. Skylar Putman and Steve Froning each had three goals in that match.

In a 16-4 victory over No. 20 Iona, Gill and Pablo Yrizar each scored four goals.

Yrizar scored six goals and Gill four in Irvine’s 20-1 victory over Bucknell.

Gill has scored 28 goals on the season.

In Big West Conference women’s volleyball:

UC Irvine 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Alison Bantel had 14 kills and Kim Collins had 11 kills and 18 digs to lead UC Irvine (5-6 overall, 1-1 in Big West) to a 15-12, 15-5, 15-10 victory at Irvine. Becky Howlett had 19 kills for Cal State Fullerton (3-10, 0-2).

In Golden State Athletic Conference women’s volleyball:

Cal Baptist 3, Christ College Irvine 0--Miriam Paulis had eight kills for Christ College Irvine (8-12), which lost, 15-9, 15-12, 15-11.

In nonconference women’s soccer:

Chapman 2, Westmont 1 (OT)--Pam Gordon scored in the fifth minute of overtime to give Chapman (4-2) the victory at Westmont. Nikki LaPorte tied the score, 1-1, in the 89th minute.

In the Dominguez Hills tournament:

Sacramento State 3, Chapman 1--Sacramento State won, 12-15, 15-6, 15-7, 16-14. Rena Strange had 15 kills and 12 digs for Chapman.

Regis College 3, Chapman 2--Regis won, 15-3, 15-11, 8-15, 4-15, 15-13. Rena Strange had 20 kills and 11 digs for Chapman (12-8).

At the San Diego State cross-country invitational:

UC Irvine’s Buffy Rabbitt won the individual title with a time of 17 minutes 8.93 seconds on the 5,000 meter course. Irvine’s women’s team finished third with 80 points, behind Northern Arizona (52) and Arizona (70).

The Irvine men finished fourth (114) behind first-place Arizona (30), Northern Arizona (65) and UC Santa Barbara (91). Ben Ayers was Irvine’s top finisher; he was 10th in 25:36.88 over the 8,000-meter course.
