The Kansas City Chiefs made Dan Majkowski’s first start of the season for the Green Bay Packers a rough one.

The Chiefs sacked Majkowski six times, intercepted two passes and recovered two fumbles, including one at the goal line, during a 17-3 victory Sunday at Lambeau Field.

“Majkowski can’t do it by himself,” said Kansas City defensive back Kevin Ross, who intercepted a pass, caused a fumble and also recovered a fumble. “Our front line put a lot of pressure up front and pressure makes a lot of people look rusty.”

It was the second consecutive year the Chiefs (2-1) kept the Packers (1-2) out of the end zone. They beat the Packers, 21-3, last December, essentially knocking Green Bay out of the playoff picture.

“I would sum it up as a tough day,” said Majkowski, who completed 19 of 31 passes for 171 yards. “We just have to eliminate those turnovers in order to be competitive. They had a very good pass rush and good secondary. We just didn’t connect at times.”

The game’s key play occurred in the third quarter with the Chiefs leading 7-3.

The Packers had a first down on the Chiefs’ two after a pass-interference call on Lloyd Burruss.

Brent Fullwood ran one yard on first down, then fumbled on second down near the goal line. Kansas City’s Dino Hackett recovered with 47 seconds left in the quarter.

“The fumble at the goal line was the critical play,” Chief Coach Marty Schottenheimer said. “They were going to go ahead.”

Trailing 10-3 in the fourth quarter, the Packers went for the first down on fourth and 10 from their 20. But Stan Petry intercepted Majkowski’s pass and returned it 33 yards for a clinching touchdown with 2:59 left.

The Packers scored first, on a 46-yard field goal by Chris Jacke with 5:51 left in the second quarter.

Christian Okoye, who gained 122 yards in 23 carries, put the Chiefs ahead with a five-yard touchdown run with 59 seconds left in the half.

Nick Lowery kicked a 20-yard field goal for the Chiefs with 10:31 left in the game after Albert Lewis blocked the seventh punt of his career.
