VENTURA : Agreement Sets Up Pier Renovation

Share

The Ventura City Council unanimously approved Monday an agreement with the state to take over maintenance of the historic Ventura Pier in exchange for a $3.5-million funding package to renovate the landmark.

Built in 1872, the Ventura Pier is the longest wooden pier in California, but the outer third has been closed since 1986 due to storm damage and age.

Under the agreement, funding for the pier restoration--$2.5 million in grants and $1 million in loans to the city--will be provided by the California State Coastal Conservancy, the California State Wildlife Conservation Board and the State Special Account for Capital Outlay.

The city would pay for the pier’s maintenance costs, estimated at $150,000 per year, from concession funds it plans to extract from developing a restaurant and beach-related retail center at the foot of the pier.

On a separate action Monday, the council voted to open the bidding process for these future facilities.
