ROME : 16 Days of NATO War Games
A major 16-day military exercise involving eight member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization begins in northwestern Italy on Friday.
The maneuvers involve about 10,000 troops in a combined land, sea and air exercise called Operation Display Determination. Nations participating are the United States, Britain, France, West Germany, Italy, Portugal, Spain and Turkey.
NATO officers insist that the maneuver has no connection with the Persian Gulf crisis. “It was planned long before the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait,” a spokesman said.
