Barstow 20, Palmdale 6--Barstow iced the game with 1:13 left when quarterback John Apodaca passed to Glen Penlind for a 40-yard touchdown at Barstow High.

The Aztecs (2-2) led, 10-6, with four minutes to play but were stopped on a goal-line stand. Two plays later, Barstow linebacker David Neal sacked Palmdale backup quarterback Rodney Williams for a safety, and the Aztecs scored the final touchdown on their next possession.

Palmdale (1-3) pulled to within 7-6 in the second quarter when Williams found Mike Frazier alone in front of the goal posts from 10 yards for a touchdown.

Palmdale starting quarterback Jay Mapson left the game in the second quarter after two Barstow defenders tackled him just after he completed a 16-yard pass to Anthony Ortega for a first down.

Palmdale scored its only touchdown two plays later. The Falcons finished with 82 yards passing and 41 rushing. The Aztecs gained 252 yards.
