Crew News 2: A judge in Providence, R.I., ruled Friday that 2 Live Crew may perform in the nearby community of Westerly despite safety concerns and critics’ claims that the group contributes to “America’s slide into the sewer.” Ordinances that the Westerly Town Council had considered as a way to bar the band from playing at the Windjammer club on Saturday or to restrict the nightspot are unconstitutional, U.S. District Judge Raymond Pettine ruled. Council members had expressed concerns about the “morality” of the band, which uses sexually explicit and profane lyrics. The Windjammer club, represented by the American Civil Liberties Union, had filed suit to stop the town from interfering with the performance.
