Congress Sets Three-Week Timetable

Here is the timetable that Congress has set for itself in carrying out the new deficit reduction accord:

Sunday: Congress votes on a stopgap resolution to continue funding for current programs and delay automatic spending cuts that would have been mandated under the Gramm-Rudman deficit-reduction law.

Friday: The two houses must pass a formal budget resolution for fiscal 1991, which begins today, with detailed spending instructions that parallel the targets set down in Sunday’s accord.

Once such a resolution has been approved, the lawmakers must pass another stopgap resolution to keep the government running until the next benchmark, Oct. 19.

Oct. 12: Congressional committees must complete work on all authorizing legislation needed to carry out the budget agreement.

Oct. 19: Congress must pass final legislation to carry out the budget accord--along with the 13 separate appropriations bills needed to finance government operations during fiscal 1991.
