CALIFORNIA IN BRIEF : SACRAMENTO : Public Schools Face Record Enrollments
State officials announced that many counties in the San Joaquin Valley can expect public school enrollment to increase by at least 50% by 1999. State Department of Finance officials said enrollment in Stanislaus County is the fastest-growing in the valley and the fifth fastest-growing in the state. Finance officials estimate Stanislaus County will see a 67.5% increase in kindergarten to 12th-grade enrollment. School officials agree that the most pressing problem is funding new facilities to accommodate the expected higher numbers of students. Among other fast-growing valley counties are San Joaquin, ranked 11th in the state and increasing by 57.1%; Tuolumne County, ranked 17th and growing by 52.8%, and Merced County, ranked 18th and facing 51.9% growth. The fastest enrollment growth in the state is in Riverside County, which officials predict will increase by more than 106% by 1999.
