Model Plane Buff Charged in Collision With Blimp
Felony assault charges were filed Tuesday against a man prosecutors say deliberately guided his radio-controlled model airplane into the Goodyear blimp as it floated overhead.
The alleged attack followed at least eight passes by the small plane, prosecutors said. The plane punctured the giant airship as it flew over Carson, leaving a gaping 3-foot hole in the 192-foot blimp.
John William Moyer, 28, of Redondo Beach was charged with felony assault, intent to commit great bodily injury and vandalism against an aircraft.
Moye’sr lawyer, William J. MacCabe, said his client was simply a model-airplane buff and he didn’t mean to disable the dirigible.
