SPORTSCOPE : Top-Ranked UCLA Soccer Team Will Host Nevada Las Vegas on Sunday

The top-ranked UCLA men’s soccer team (8-0-3) will play host to Nevada Las Vegas (5-3-2) at 2 p.m. Sunday at the North Soccer Field on campus.

Last week the Bruins defeated California, 1-0, and Stanford, 2-1, on the road. Paul Ratcliffe scored against Cal. Goals against the Cardinal were scored by Joe-Max Moore in overtime and Zak Ibsen.

Billy Thompson leads UCLA with eight goals and five assists. UNLV’s scoring leader is Doug Borgel with eight goals and three assists.

The No. 2 UCLA water polo team (14-0) will begin its Pacific-10 Conference schedule at 4 p.m. Saturday at No. 3 USC (12-3).

Last week the Bruins beat No. 10 Cal State Long Beach, 10-4. Oliver Will scored four goals for UCLA and now has 31 goals and a team-high 48 assists. Bruin Stefan Pollmann has a team-high 53 goals, 19 assists and 21 steals.

The No. 6 Pepperdine water polo team (6-6) will start Big West Conference play this weekend. The Waves will play at No. 5 UC Santa Barbara (10-5, 2-0) at 3 p.m. Friday and host to No. 10 Cal State Long Beach (2-6) at 1 p.m. Saturday at Raleigh Runnels Pool on campus.

In last week’s NorCal Tournament, Pepperdine was 2-2, defeating UC Davis, 12-3, and Brown, 12-6, and losing to No. 3 USC, 12-11, and No. 4 Stanford, 15-10. Pepperdine’s Geoffrey Clark, who has been sidelined with a broken finger, returned to action and scored 11 goals in the tournament.

The top-ranked UCLA women’s volleyball team (13-1 overall, 6-0 in the Pac-10 as the week began) will play at USC (6-6, 3-3) at 7:30 p.m. Friday .

Last week the Bruins defeated Loyola Marymount and Oregon, each in three games, and Oregon State in four. In the three matches, Bruin Marissa Hatchett had 34 kills, 15 blocks, 10 digs and two service aces. She had a career-high 15 kills against Oregon State.

Jenny Evans leads UCLA with 198 kills, 27 aces and 193 digs.

The No. 11 Pepperdine women’s volleyball team (9-3 overall and 1-0 in the West Coast Conference at the start of the week) will entertain St. Mary’s (10-4, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Friday , the University of San Francisco (5-8, 1-1) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo in a non-conference match at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Firestone Fieldhouse.

The Waves won their conference opener against the University of San Diego in four games. Blair Noonan led Pepperdine with 19 kills, and teammate Lesli Asplund added 14 kills and a team-high seven blocks.

The UCLA women’s and men’s cross-country teams will compete Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.

At last week’s UC Riverside Invitational, the Bruin women were fourth with 156 points. Arizona State won with 71 points. UCLA’s Kira Jorgensen finished 16th in 18:35 over 5,000 meters.

The Pepperdine men’s and women’s cross country teams will run Saturday in the Biola Invitational. At last week’s UC Riverside Invitational, the Wave women were 18th among 31 teams. The Pepperdine men did not place. Jenny McGuire led the Wave women, finishing 104th in 20:42.

The UCLA women’s golf team, which finished second in the Oregon Tournament to start the season, will compete Friday through Sunday in the Ohio State Invitational.

At Oregon, Arizona won with 904 and UCLA had 927. Top Bruins were Debbi Koyama, fourth at 226; freshman Patti Sinn, sixth at 232, and freshman Lisa Kiggens , seventh at 233.

The Pepperdine women’s golf team finished eighth at the Oregon Invitational with 1,009. Waves Ashley Adleta and Kristy Park tied for 28th place at 250.

The UCLA men’s tennis team ranked second and the UCLA women third in the preseason polls of the Intercollegiate Tennis Coaches Assn. The Pepperdine men were No. 11, and the Wave women tied Arizona for 11th place. Some Waves are expected to play Friday through Sunday in the West Coast Fall Men’s Championships at the Warner Center Club in Woodland Hills.
