Gen. Colin L. Powell, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and his Soviet counterpart, Gen. Mikhail Moiseyev, on Thursday toured Navy and Marine facilities in San Diego in the latest round of U.S.-Soviet military reciprocal visits. It was the first time that the highest ranking military officers for U.S. and Soviet forces made a cooperative visit to San Diego military bases.

Amid tight security, Powell and Moiseyev, both four-star generals and former infantry commanders, arrived at 2 p.m. at the North Island Naval Air Station on Coronado Island. The generals toured the guided missile cruiser Chancellorsville and attack submarine Guitarro before traveling by boat across San Diego Bay to the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, where they viewed outdoor combat training and the recruit receiving barracks.

Thursday’s visit was the second this year by Soviet military authorities to San Diego.
