Harry G. Finkel; Retired Carpenter

Harry G. Finkel, a retired carpenter and longtime Granada Hills resident, has died in Van Nuys at the age of 87.

Finkel died Wednesday of cancer, said his son, Robert Finkel of Tarzana.

He was born July 2, 1903, in Chicago. In 1927, he married May Steiner, who died in 1980. Finkel came to Los Angeles in 1944, settling in Granada Hills in the mid-1950s. He worked as a carpenter for about 45 years, until his retirement in the early 1960s.

Finkel was a longtime member of Elks Lodge No. 1539 in San Fernando and Carpenters Local 1052 in Beverly Hills. He also helped start bingo games at Temple Ahavat Shalom in Northridge and did fund raising for Jewish Homes for the Aging. In 1982, he married Wilma Stern, who died in 1986.

He is survived by his son; a brother, Charles Finkel of Sun City, Calif.; three grandsons; a great-grandson, and a great-granddaughter.

A funeral is planned at 2 p.m. Sunday at Mt. Sinai Mortuary, 5950 Forest Lawn Drive, in Los Angeles, with burial to follow at Mt. Sinai Memorial Park. Kapin Mortuary in San Fernando is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made in Finkel’s name to the City of Hope.
