Casts Chosen for British Opera Dates

The D’Oyly Carte Opera Company of Great Britain has announced casting for “The Mikado” and “The Pirates of Penzance,” Oct.16 through 21 at the Orange County Performing Arts Center in Costa Mesa.

* “The Mikado,” Oct. 16 through 18, 8 p.m.: David Fieldsend will sing Nanki-Poo, Sandra Dugdale will appear as Yum-Yum, Eric Roberts will be Ko-Ko. Susan Gorton will sing Katisha. Michael Ducarel will be the Mikado. John Ayldon will appear as Pooh-Bah. John Pryce-Jones will conduct on Oct. 16 and 17; Tim Dean will take over on Oct. 18.

The production will be staged by Christopher Webber. Sets are by Eileen Diss, costumes by Jessica Gwynne and lighting design by Paul Pyant. Carole Todd is the choreographer.

* “Pirates,” Oct. 19 through 21 at 8 p.m., and Oct. 20 and 21 at 2 p.m: Fieldsend will sing Frederic, and Marilyn Hill Smith will be Mabel. Roberts will appear as Major-General Stanley, Malcolm Rivers will be the Pirate King. Gorton will sing Ruth. John Rath will be the Police Sergeant. Pryce-Jones will conduct the evening performances; Dean will conduct the matinees.

Keith Warner will direct. Virginia Mason is credited as reviving the staging. Sets and costumes are by Marie Jeanne Lecca. Lighting design is by Pyant and choreography by Anthony van Laast.
