School Still Taking the Heat

Share

Boy, am I steamed. In your article regarding air conditioning for 35 L.A. schools, it was stated that “most schools that have been on year-round for several years have had air-conditioning.”

Not at Osceola Street Elementary.

Then, to top it off, I find three schools in my area that are getting air-conditioning and they’re either just starting year-round, or are going to be year-round by 1991. And Osceola is not on the list.

Do you know how long our school has been year-round? Twelve years.

Twelve years of teachers trying to educate children in rooms that exceed 90 degrees in the late spring through early fall. We were the pioneers for this “experiment.” We have endured to make a point that year-round can work. To be overlooked by the Los Angeles Unified School District, when we have supported their year-round campaign long before it became fashionable, is a giant slap in the face.

We deserve the air-conditioning for our loyalty and support. And we want it now.
