Bernard R. Castagnola, 41, Franciscan friar, priest and key social worker at Los Angeles’ Chris Brownlie Hospice. Born in Summit Hill, Pa., he entered the Franciscan Order when he was 18 and was ordained a priest in 1975. With a master’s degree in social work and gerontology from USC, he worked with the elderly and with victims of acquired immune deficiency syndrome.
