Culver City : Charity Policy Reaffirmed

Share

The Culver City Council has reaffirmed a city policy of not giving funds to charitable and nonprofit organizations unless the city is a co-sponsor of the event or program.

The council formally reiterated that policy Monday night when it voted 3 to 0 not to waive the cost of police services for a Culver City Kiwanis Club bike-a-thon and not to give money to the Culver City middle and high school marching band. Mayor Steven Gourley and Councilwoman Jozelle Smith were absent.

“If we approve this for the Kiwanis Club, then we’re going to open up the floodgates for all the other clubs to come to us and ask for funds,” said Councilman Mike Balkman.

Marcia Jenkins, mother of a high school student in the band, had pleaded to the council for money for band uniforms. She said the band needs at least $25,000 for 60 uniforms.
