Mary Jeanne Wyma; Retired Teacher

Mary Jeanne Wyma, a teacher for 22 years at Mayall Street Elementary School in Sepulveda before her retirement, has died at the age of 68.

Mrs. Wyma died of cancer Sept. 29 at her home in Carlotta, near Eureka in Northern California, where she and her husband moved in 1984.

Born Mary Jeanne McLaughlin in 1923 in Chicago, she came to Los Angeles with her family in 1931. She graduated summa cum laude from UC Berkeley in 1944, obtained a teaching credential and began a career that spanned 36 years. She taught at Vaughn Street Elementary School in Pacoima and other San Fernando Valley schools before beginning her long tenure at Mayall in 1960. Mrs. Wyma lived in Sun Valley, Sunland and Tujunga before moving to Northern California.

She is survived by her husband, Ted; sons Michael Wyma of Los Angeles and Thomas Wyma of McKinleyville; a sister, Barbara Hansen of Oceanside; and grandchildren Demian Wyma and Chloe Wyma of Los Angeles.

In retirement she was active in the Order of Eastern Star and several volunteer organizations.

A memorial service is scheduled for 3 p.m. Oct. 21 at the Granada Hills Masonic Temple, 16535 Rinaldi St. The family has asked that memorial contributions be made to the Grand Chapter of California, O.E.S. Scholarship Fund, 870 Market St., Suite 722, San Francisco 94102-2996.
