THE GOD WHO WOULD BE KNOWN: Revelations of the Divine in Contemporary Science. John M. Templeton and Robert L. Herrmann. Harper. hardcover, 214 pages, $19.95.

It is no coincidence that many winners of the rich, annual Templeton Prize for Progress in Religion bridge the fields of science and religion. Templeton, the Presbyterian financial wizard who funds the prize, and Herrmann, executive director of the evangelical American Scientific Affiliation, look to both fields for wisdom.

DOUBTING THOMAS, Christology in Story Form. John B. Cobb Jr. Crossroad. softcover, 96 pages, $8.95.

A world-class theologian recently retired from the School of Theology at Claremont, Cobb wrote a fictional account of a theologically conservative student who encounters troubling religious ideas while serving as an intern chaplain at a university. Not a scintillating narrative, but the story/study guide shows how differently religious questions can be posed.
