No Excuse for Boredom

Share

In regard to the article Sept. 16 on gangs in suburbia, one Thousand Oaks gang member says “We’re bored. There’s nothing to do in this town.” Another: “We would do anything for each other.”

Well, guys--why don’t you take all that energy and really make your mark? Instead of wasting paint scrawling on walls (and polluting with the fumes), make that comment, “Thousand Oaks is our neighborhood,” something to be proud of.

A neighbor can’t afford to paint his house. Can you handle a brush? Someone’s fence is falling down. Know how to use a hammer? An elderly person can’t do yardwork. Know how to care for a garden? A neighbor kid is getting behind in school. Know how to do arithmetic or coach reading? “We just hang out and party.” How about a block party to clean up graffiti and plant some trees?

You seem to want recognition. Do something to deserve it. You, and your neighborhood, will get back more than you realize.
