Westminster Driver Slain; Passenger Held

A Westminster man was shot to death early Friday while driving on the Foothill Freeway in San Dimas, and a passenger of the car was arrested on suspicion of murder, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies said.

Hai Vu Nguyen, 19, was pronounced dead at San Dimas Community Hospital about 4:45 a.m., shortly after the shooting.

Initially, the five passengers in the 1986 Honda Civic told authorities that Nguyen had been wounded during a random shooting on the freeway. Homicide investigators, however, later determined that Nguyen had been shot in the back, allegedly by Dai Trung Nguyen, 18, who was in the back seat of the car, sheriff’s deputies said.

“We don’t know if (the shooting) was intentional or accidental,” Sheriff’s Deputy Roger Hom said. “It’s still being investigated at this point.”

Hom said it has not been established if Dai Trung Nguyen was related to the victim.

The suspect was being held without bail at the sheriff’s station in Walnut.
