Former Thrift Chairman Pleads Innocent: Oliver A. Trigg Jr., the former chairman of Family Federal Savings Bank, one of the nation’s largest black-owned thrifts, pleaded innocent to charges that he masterminded an elaborate scheme to buy Family with its own money. Trigg and two associates, James E. Williams and William A. Powell, denied any wrongdoing in Trigg’s purchase of a controlling interest in the thrift for $1.24 million in 1987. Prosecutors said the scheme was carried out through a series of real estate transactions. Trial is scheduled for Nov. 20. If convicted on all counts, Trigg faces up to 94 years in prison and a $1-million fine. (Case No. 90-698. Pleas Entered Oct. 8).
