LAGUNA HILLS : Medigap Insurance Discussion Planned

Share

A forum to help senior citizens understand private supplemental medical insurance and avoid becoming victims of abusive practices is scheduled for 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. today at the Beverly Manor in Laguna Hills.

Called “Consumer Guidelines for Medicare and Long-Term Care Insurance,” the forum is sponsored by the California Department of Aging’s Health Insurance Counseling Advocacy Program.

Directors for the advocacy program said the implementation of Medicare 25 years ago also opened a market for private Medicare supplementary insurance, called Medigap.

“Many feel the insurance industry is taking advantage of individuals living on fixed incomes, using hard sales or abusive sales techniques,” said Julie Schoen, a spokeswoman for the advocacy program.

In the forum, senior citizens will be provided with guidelines to follow when purchasing Medigap insurance, as well as long-term care insurance.

The forum is provided free, and those interested in attending can call (714) 837-8000 for more information. Beverly Manor is at 24452 Health Center Drive.
