Western Digital Lays Off 200 Abroad

Western Digital Corp. recently laid off 200 people at a manufacturing plant in Puerto Rico, a company spokesman said Wednesday.

The spokesman, Robert J. Blair, said the computer-products company laid off a third of its work force in Puerto Rico because of a shift in demand for its products. The Puerto Rico plant had made a range of products for customers in the Western Hemisphere, but now the plant will make only parts for the company’s Singapore disk-drive factory. The shift was required because Western Digital cannot keep up with demand for disk drives, Blair said.

He also said the company has no plans to replace Robert N. Stephens, a senior vice president and general manager of three Western Digital divisions, who recently left to join Costa Mesa-based Emulex Corp. as chief executive. Kathryn A. Braun, executive vice president, will now oversee all five of the company’s divisions.
