Junket and Scrapple

Question: I have tried far and wide to find junket rennet tablets. Can you help?

Answer: We last answered this question on July 20, 1989, so perhaps it’s time to remind people that the tablets are available locally at many health food stores. You may also order them by mail from the Vermont Country Store, Mail Order Office, P.O. Box 3000, Manchester Center, Vt. 05255-3000. Cost for a package of 36 tablets is $5.85, plus shipping.

For those unfamiliar with rennet, it is an enzyme from the lining of a calf’s stomach used in making cheese. Rennet is also used in a dessert similar to custard. Vermont Country Store sells three boxes of the strawberry, vanilla or chocolate custard for $5.25, plus shipping.

In response to the Aug. 23 You Asked About . . . . column on Philadelphia scrapple, several readers informed us Habbersett’s Scrapple is available locally at Ralphs Grocery stores; Jones Scrapple may be purchased at Hughes Markets. You’ll find it in the frozen meat section.
