Kirk Muller scored a disputed goal with 5:54 remaining Wednesday to keep New Jersey unbeaten at home as the Devils beat the Washington Capitals, 3-2, at East Rutherford, N.J.

Peter Stastny’s backhander glanced off Muller’s skate and trickled behind Don Beaupre to break a 2-2 tie. But while the Devils (4-2-1) celebrated, the Capitals (2-5-2) swarmed referee Andy Van Hellemond, protesting that Muller deliberately kicked in the puck.

“He pushed it in with his skate,” Beaupre said. “I never saw a stick anywhere near it. “

Vancouver 3, Boston 1--Brian Bradley’s disputed goal with less than five minutes to play led the Canucks (4-2-0) past the Bruins (4-2-1) at Vancouver.

Bradley broke a 1-1 tie with a 15-foot shot to the far corner, behind goaltender Andy Moog. The Bruins argued that Bradley didn’t clear the offensive zone on a delayed offside.

Montreal 4, Buffalo 3--Mike Keane scored two goals on tip-ins of blocked shots as the Canadiens beat the Sabres at Buffalo.

Brian Skrudland and Denis Savard also scored for the Canadiens (4-2-1). Montreal had 33 shots to 30 for the Sabres (0-4-2).

Hartford 3, Toronto 1--Ray Ferraro and Scott Young scored power-play goals in the first period and goalie Peter Sidorkiewicz made 30 saves to lead the Whalers over the Maple Leafs at Toronto.

Paul Cyr added an empty-net goal for the Whalers (4-2-2) with 42 seconds remaining. Vince Damphousse’s third-period goal was all Toronto (0-5-1) could manage.

N.Y. Rangers 5, Winnipeg 3--Darren Turcotte’s tiebreaking power-play goal at 2:47 of the third period lifted the Rangers (5-2-0) over the Jets (1-6-1) at New York.
