American Brands Inc.: The global consumer products holding company reported record third-quarter earnings of $231 million, up 39% from the same period a year ago. Revenue also reached a record level, up 26% to $3.9 billion. The sale in July of Theodorus Niemeyer, a Netherlands-based tobacco company, resulted in a net gain of $31 million. The Old Greenwich, Conn., firm also credited increased sales at its core tobacco businesses.
