William John McLaughlin Jr.; Retired Police Officer

William John McLaughlin Jr., a retired Los Angeles police officer, has died in a Woodland Hills hospital. He was 64.

A longtime Van Nuys resident, McLaughlin died Oct. 12 of cancer, said his wife, Kathleen McLaughlin.

Born Oct. 15, 1925, in Los Angeles, McLaughlin graduated from Van Nuys High School in 1943 and served in the Navy during World War II. He joined the Los Angeles Police Department in 1948. He worked patrol in various divisions, including Van Nuys and West Valley, and retired in 1978.

He is survived by his wife of 40 years; sons David McLaughlin of Sunland and William John McLaughlin III of Redwood City, Calif.; daughter Cynthia Wooten of Eugene, Ore.; sister Jean Lind of Concord, Calif.; and two granddaughters.

A memorial service is scheduled for 11 a.m. today at Granada Hills Church of Religious Science, 17622 Chatsworth St., where he was a member. The Neptune Society in Burbank is handling the arrangements. Donations can be made to a memorial fund in McLaughlin’s name at the church.
