California IN BRIEF : ENCINITAS : No Negligence by Dispatchers Found

The Sheriff’s Department said it found no negligence among dispatchers who handled emergency calls moments before an Amtrak train hit a transport truck stalled at a crossing in Encinitas earlier this month. The eight-coach train, carrying 125 passengers, had braked moments before the collision on Oct. 3. It had slowed from 90 m.p.h. to 40 m.p.h., its speed at the time it struck an auto transport truck at a Leucadia railway crossing. Six passengers suffered minor injuries and were treated at hospitals and released. The rig, which was torn in half by the collision’s impact, had become stuck on a mound while crossing the track. Truck driver Mike Tune of Troy, Mich., and a passenger were not injured. They had walked to a nearby store and called 911 to alert authorities.
