Menu Mistakes

Grahame L. Jones, in his excellent story about traveling on the freighter Genevieve Lykes (“Freighter Days Aboard an Africa-Bound Lady,” Sept. 9), quotes some wildly original and amusing items from the ship’s typed daily menus.

Our son is a deck officer in the merchant marine and I’d like to share some of the items he has collected on his various ships: “orange jive,” “sliced picket” and “dill picket,” “roast hunch of veal,” “rot beef sandwitch” and “chilled dog in bum” (that’s chili dog in a bun). For breakfast on one ship, he had a choice of “stewed prums,” “scramed eggs” or “pain omelette.”

Must be ships’ stewards all take the same typing courses.
