SANTA ANA : School District Programs Honored
The Santa Ana Unified School District has been honored with Golden Bell awards by the California School Boards Assn. for innovative programs in specialized science, math and English.
Golden Bells are given to districts throughout the state to honor exemplary programs in from kindergarten through 12th grade.
“I think it’s a tremendous compliment,” said Supt. Rudy Castruita. “It’s a real tribute to the quality programs we have in our district and to the outstanding teachers who take the time to make them work.”
A first-place Golden Bell was given to Spurgeon Intermediate School for a language arts program for students who have been identified as potential dropouts.
The program gives these students, who have low reading levels, the opportunity to study the same literature as their peers through the use of props and drawings.
Lathrop Intermediate School received first-place honors for a general science program aimed at the most severely limited English students.
The district’s elementary division won a first-place award for the Santa Ana Fullerton Elementary School Mathematics Project, a joint program between the district and Cal State Fullerton, which brings in experts who work to find use new ways to teach math.
Willard Intermediate School was given a second-place award for its limited-English science program.
