Outfielder Willie McGee, who became the National League batting champion before being traded to Oakland, headed the list of 19 players who filed for free agency, raising the total to 50.

Also, Detroit pitcher Jack Morris exercised his 1991 option for $2.1 million.

Jamie Quirk, a backup catcher for the A’s, also filed, as did pitcher Danny Jackson of the World Series champion Cincinnati Reds. Four players from the Tigers filed: pitcher Edwin Nunez, infielder-outfielder Darnell Coles and outfielders Larry Sheets and John Shelby.

Also filing were Boston pitcher Mike Boddicker, Angel outfielder Max Venable, Houston Astro outfielder Terry Puhl, Kansas City Royal pitcher Andy McGaffigan and first baseman Gerald Perry, New York Met infielder Pat Tabler, Pittsburgh Pirate infielder Rafael Belliard and outfielder Gary Redus, San Francisco Giant catcher Gary Carter, Seattle Mariner pitcher Matt Young, Toronto Blue Jay pitcher Bud Black and Texas Ranger pitcher Craig McMurtry.
