Share

The Bruins (3-4) might have a better overall record if they had gotten off to a better start in the seven games played.

UCLA has been outscored, 73-41, in the first quarter. After that, they are even with their opponents, 147 points apiece.

Oregon State, Saturday’s opponent at the Rose Bowl, has been outscored, 81-27, in the first quarter and 142-41 by halftime.

Oregon State tailback Dwayne Owens is the nephew of James Owens, a former UCLA football and track star.

A walk-on from American River Community College in Sacramento because Oregon State had used up its scholarships, Owens was expected to redshirt.

An injury to running back Jerrell Waddell forced Coach Dave Kragthorpe to use Owens. After missing the first two games, he has responded by rushing for 199 yards in five games, an average of 5.3 yards a carry. He also is averaging 24.9 yards on kickoff returns.
