White Won’t Be Back for ‘91, Royals Say
Kansas City Royals veteran infielder Frank White won’t be offered a contract for the 1991 season, the team announced today.
Royals General Manager Herk Robinson said that he spoke this morning with White, who has won eight Gold Gloves at second base, and told him of the decision.
“The Royals are deeply appreciative to Frank for his many years of dedicated service and for his many accomplishments,” Robinson said. “Frank will always be in the hearts of all Royals’ fans. He was a tremendous player and is a wonderful person.”
In more than 17 seasons with Kansas City, White had a career batting average of .255, with 2,006 hits, 160 home runs and 886 runs batted in.
He was named Most Valuable Player in the 1980 American League Championship Series against New York, was five times a member of the American League All-Star team and was twice the Royals’ Player of the Year.
He played in 2,324 games, a record for the team.
