‘Jewels of the Nile’
Adventurers in search of the “Jewel of the Nile” didn’t have to hop a military transport to the Middle East last week; instead, they made their way to Davidson Field in Newport Beach.
Beneath swaying palm fronds during the halftime of Thursday night’s prep football game was the culmination of a week of homecoming activities for Corona del Mar High School.
The Egyptian homecoming theme, decided by the high school’s senior class officers, came under scrutiny after Iraq’s invasion of Kuwait. Alan Waterman, the school’s activities director, said he and the principal, Tom Jacobson, held numerous discussions about the appropriateness of the Nile theme.
Each class was responsible for building a float for halftime. The senior class halftime float featured pyramids and a camel, juniors showcased King Tut and sophomores had Cleopatra. The freshmen’s float, which won the competition, featured an Egyptian barge.
Senior Brooke Simpson, a member of the school’s dance company, was crowned Corona del Mar’s homecoming queen. Senior Mark Perlmutter, a varsity football player and member of student government, was named king at the homecoming dance Saturday night.
