Santa Monica : Decision Delayed on Panels
The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District board is postponing making appointments to district advisory committees for two weeks to give more people a chance to apply for the posts. Board member Connie Jenkins said that not enough minorities or people who live south of Wilshire Boulevard had applied and that the committees wouldn’t be fairly balanced.
“If we have 25 to 35 people (in total), then we need three or four blacks, at least that many or more Hispanics and two or three Asians,” Jenkins said at Monday’s board meeting.
She said no blacks or Asians had applied to serve on the committees, which will advise the school board on affirmative action, budget, handicapped accessibility, education, health services and Santa Monica High School.
Applications are available at the schools and at the district office, 1651 16th St., Santa Monica.
