SIMI VALLEY : Freeway Barrier Construction Slated

Construction of a median barrier on the Simi Valley Freeway between Stearns Avenue and Kuehner Drive in Simi Valley probably will start in the summer of 1992, the California Department of Transportation said Thursday.

The two-mile project, to cost about $500,000, has been nominated for inclusion in Caltrans’ 1991-92 safety construction program, said Peter Hsu, a Caltrans senior transportation engineer.

“I can’t say that means it will definitely be built, but the chances for it are very good,” he said.

Hunt Braly, an aide to state Sen. Ed Davis (R-Santa Clarita), who backed the project, said: “Since 1985, there have been seven accidents on that stretch of freeway involving vehicles that have crossed over into opposing lanes. Ten people have been hurt, one fatally.”

Hunt said Davis is also committed to extending the barrier several miles west of Stearns to the end of the freeway.

Hsu said Caltrans will begin seeking bids to design the project by April, 1992.
