William D. Soo Hoo, the state’s first Chinese-American mayor when he was elected in Oxnard in 1966, died of a heart attack Thursday. He was 66.

Soo Hoo, who had been treated for heart problems since 1985, died about 6:20 a.m. in the emergency room at St. John’s Regional Medical Center, Deputy Coroner Craig Stevens said. Firefighters and ambulance and hospital personnel attempted to revive Soo Hoo for about 40 minutes at his house and at the hospital, a Fire Department spokesman said.

Soo Hoo, also the first Oxnard native to serve as mayor, was elected in 1966 and served for four years.
