DEMOCRATS: Not all of the Presidents and ex-Presidents who visited Orange County have been Republicans. . . . Woodrow Wilson, trying to drum up support for the League of Nations, stopped off in Laguna Beach in 1919--to visit an art show, naturally. . . . In 1935, F.D.R. stopped for lunch at the estate of Democratic power broker Hamilton Cotton (later purchased by Richard Nixon for his Western White House) and passed through again in 1942 en route to dedicate Camp Pendleton. Cotton used to host all-night poker games for Roosevelt. Lyndon Johnson came to Irvine in 1964 for the UCI dedication. Jimmy Carter visited the county last spring to boost affordable housing, though he passed on the Nixon Library dedication, which was attended by four Republican Presidents--Nixon, Ford, Bush and Reagan.
