Union Seeks Vote by Times Press Operators: The Graphic Communications International Union has filed a petition with the National Labor Relations Board seeking a vote on union representation of roughly 600 pressroom employees at the Los Angeles Times. If the NLRB grants the request, The Times’ press operators will vote in upcoming months on whether to form a union. “The Times has a long tradition of dealing directly and informally with its employees, which has produced among the best pay, benefits and working conditions in the pressroom of any newspaper in the country,” said EuGene L. Falk, executive vice president for administration at The Times. “We will make every effort to assure that this relationship with our employees continues.” William Torrence, GCIU vice president, said Times employees approached the union about two years ago to organize pressroom employees.
