An altercation between two groups in different vehicles early Friday resulted in the stabbing death of one man and the arrest of another, police said.

The body of Scott Meyer, 28, of Carlsbad was found on a grass embankment on the west side of El Camino Real just north of Elm Avenue with a stab wound in his chest, said Lt. Don Lewis. Meyer’s passenger, William Butler, 28, also of Carlsbad, suffered a stab wound to the head and was treated at an area hospital and released, he said.

The incident occurred about 12:32 a.m. as Meyer and Butler were traveling south on El Camino Real, Lewis said. Three men in a pick-up truck followed Meyer’s car for several blocks before pulling in front of him and cutting him off, he said.

All five men got out of their vehicles and exchanged words, Lewis said, although the subject of the argument was unknown. In the scuffle that followed, Meyer and Butler were stabbed and the three men in the pick-up truck fled.

Butler then drove Meyer’s car to his nearby home and called 911, Lewis said. Patrol officers arrived and found Meyer lying on the grass embankment.

About 8:15 a.m. Friday, homicide detectives arrested 18-year-old Vista resident David Maynes at Vista Way and Olive Avenue, Lewis said. Maynes was booked into the County Jail in Vista on a murder charge, he said.
