PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : RAIDERS : Plans Vary for Mini-Vacation

With a bye this week, how will the Raiders spend Sunday?

“It’s a difficult thing to adjust to, mentally,” Raider nose guard Bob Golic said. “I’ll probably wake up and still have my pregame meal of steak and eggs and a baked potato for breakfast Sunday because I don’t want to break the routine.”

Coach Art Shell said he’ll watch games on TV. “It will be a good opportunity to reflect and watch somebody else’s games,” he said.

Quarterback Jay Schroeder plans to have a barbecue with his family. This is the first time since the NFL Players Assn. strike in 1987 that the Raiders have had a week off during the season.

“But this is a little different than the strike because I know I have to work come Monday,” Schroeder said.

After taking today and Sunday off, the Raiders will resume practice Monday to prepare for next Sunday’s game against the Chiefs in Kansas City.

Schroeder remains the AFC’s top-rated quarterback; wide receiver Mervyn Fernandez leads the AFC with 548 receiving yards and Willie Gault is eighth with 437 yards. Other statistics:

--Tailback Marcus Allen is the AFC’s sixth-leading rusher with 340 yards.

--Defensive end Greg Townsend is sixth in sacks with six.

--The Raiders’ defense ranks third in the AFC behind Miami and Pittsburgh.

--The Raiders’ offense is 10th.
