Finding Peace in Grenada

Getting there: American Airlines has daily service from San Juan, Puerto Rico, to Grenada. Round-trip fare is $158, with maximum stay of seven days. British Airways has weekly service on Saturdays from London to Grenada. BWIA has frequent direct service from New York and Miami (the plane stops in Barbados or Trinidad en route). American, Pan Am and Eastern have flights to Barbados that connect with LIAT. Some words of caution for connecting passengers: In Barbados, LIAT weighs all bags and imposes hefty excess charges.

Getting around: Taxis can be expensive ($15 for a five-minute ride from the airport to your hotel). Better to hire a car and driver for the day. There’s a $10 departure tax, and while the airport is new, don’t expect major duty-free stores and services. U.S. currency is readily accepted on the island, so there’s no need to exchange money.

Where to stay: Hotel rates have nearly doubled since 1983, but they’re still tolerable by Caribbean standards. A cottage at the Flamboyant Hotel on Grand Anse Beach (P.O. Box 214, Grenada, 800-223-9815 or 809-444-4247) cost $40 a night in 1983, $80 this year. An apartment at Twelve Degrees North on L’Anse Aux Epines beach (P.O. Box 241, Grenada, 809-444-4580) was $75 a day in 1983. Today, it’s $130.
